Breaking the Reins Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway

Today, I'm happy to be one of the review stops on the Breaking the Reins Blog Tour.

Breaking the Reins
By: Juliana Haygert
Publication date: August 14th 2013
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance
Breaking the Reins on Goodreads here.
Synopsis:
Horses, mansions, tea parties, and lies are twenty-year-old Hannah Taylor’s life. To others, her family and her relationship with Eric is perfect. But she knows the truth. She lives it.

After a fire takes her grandma’s life and kills her horse, Hannah’s immaculate life spirals out of control. Her father disapproves of her decision to run her grandma’s ranch instead of focusing solely on learning the family business; Animal Control brings her Argus, a mistreated horse that she can’t turn away even though she’s not ready for another horse; and her boyfriend, Eric Bennett, a world famous polo player, becomes possessive and authoritarian. Despite her best efforts to disguise it, Hannah grows wary of him.

Then, Leonardo Fernandes struts onto the polo scene. A cocky rookie with a messy life of his own, he’s drawn to Hannah and isn’t afraid of showing it, even when Eric makes it clear she is his and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep it that way. Hannah suffers for Eric’s jealousy. The abuse only gets worse when Leo steals the title of best polo player in the world from Eric.

But the title isn’t enough for Leo. He wants Hannah too, and she can’t deny her attraction to him either. Somehow, she must find a way to break free from abusive Eric before he breaks every bone in her body.

My Thoughts:

Warning!!! Review may contain spoilers, I tried not to, but it might still be a bit spoilish.

O the drama!

Narrated from Hannah’s first-person-perspective, BREAKING THE REINS is another angst-filled new adult that fans of Heartland are sure to love. However, unlike Heartland, BREAKING THE REINS takes on a much darker, violent tone. Hannah is a very complicated heroine, in the sense that I really enjoyed reading from her perspective, but I disagreed with some of her personal life choices- I was annoyed with how long she took to break things off with Eric, and I disagreed with her reasoning behind keeping the domestic abuse a secret, I really don’t think the end justified the means. With that said, I’ve thankfully never been put into an abusive situation like Hannah’s, so it might be unfair for me too judge so harshly.

We do have a Knight in shining armor (well he doesn’t wear armor, but he does have the horse!) in the form of the sexy, Leo. He’s fun and easy-going, basically everything that Eric isn’t and he is completely head-over-heels for Hannah. The chemistry between these two is what really kept me up late saying “just one more chapter” I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow from start to …

Now Eric… what can I really say about him? Well it’s basically as simple as this, I found absolutely NO redeeming qualities in him, whatsoever, he’s basically the epitome of a two dimensional villain.

I do want to warn readers though who shy away from disturbing events, that there is a few scenes of domestic abuse and one of animal cruelty (this one really upset me), but Haygert, in no way, sheds a positive light on these events, but if you think these scenes may upset you, it might be best to pass on this one for now.

I really enjoyed BREAKING THE REINS and the sexy chemistry Haygert created between Hannah and Leo and I would recommend this read to all Romance fans!

Happy Reading!!!
