It was a FRENZY!!!

I attended a blogger event at the HarperCollins offices downtown, earlier this week, in celebration of Harper's very own FRENZY magazine, a fabulous magazine if I do say so myself!
I had a blast meeting so many amazing Canadian bloggers (including those from Ontario Blog Squad- was so excited haha)

We also got to meet the amazing FRENZY and HarperTeen team, and discuss they're favourite fall picks. Which included...

Breathe by Sarah Crossan
Release Date: October 2nd/12.
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
Inhale. Exhale. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe . . .

The world is dead.
The survivors live under the protection of Breathe, the corporation that found a way to manufacture oxygen-rich air.

ALINA
has been stealing for a long time. She’s a little jittery, but not terrified. All she knows is that she’s never been caught before. If she’s careful, it’ll be easy. If she’s careful.

QUINN
should be worried about Alina and a bit afraid for himself, too, but even though this is dangerous, it’s also the most interesting thing to happen to him in ages. It isn’t every day that the girl of your dreams asks you to rescue her.

BEA
wants to tell him that none of this is fair; they’d planned a trip together, the two of them, and she’d hoped he’d discover her out here, not another girl.

And as they walk into the Outlands with two days’ worth of oxygen in their tanks, everything they believe will be shattered. Will they be able to make it back? Will they want to?

Enter Peter Gregory. A rich kid and the leader of a hacker alliance, Peter needs people with Noa’s talents on his team. Especially after a shady corporation threatens his life. But what Noa and Peter don’t realize is that Noa holds the key to a terrible secret, and there are those who’d stop at nothing to silence her for good.

Filled with action, suspense, and romance, this first book in a new trilogy offers readers nonstop thrills.

Starling by Lesley Livingston
Release Date: August 28th/12
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
"Love is just the beginning... of the end."

Mason Starling is a champion fencer for Gosforth Academy, but she’s never had to fight for her life. Until now. Without help from the mysterious stranger who appeared in the midst of the storm, she might not have made it at all. But now, in the aftermath, Mason’s life begins to spin dramatically, mystically out of control, and the only one who seems able to help her is the stranger who can remember nothing but his name: Fennrys Wolf.

As Mason and Fenn uncover more about Fenn’s past and the strange events that surround them, they realize that Mason’s family — and its dark allegiance to the ancient Norse gods — is at the center of everything. A predetermined fate seems to be closing in on Mason, but is it possible to change one’s destiny?

Readers who fell in love with Lesley Livingston’s Wondrous Strange trilogy and those who love Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series will be captivated by the sweeping romance and pulse-pounding action of Starling.

Insurgent (Divergent #2) by Veronica Roth
Now Available!!!
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

"New York Times" bestselling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian "Divergent" series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

We discussed possible options for the Third title and love triangles- yay or nay, I personally LOVE love triangles and I was one of the only  ones which I thought was funny.

But that wasn't all, there was a surprise guest that showed up...

I GOT TO MEET TAHEREH MAFI!!! She's amazing! So down-to-earth :)
And then she signed a copy of Shatter Me, supplied by HarperCollins (now I have an extra copy- guess I'm going to have to do a giveaway huh?)
Tahereh thought I was asking her to sign this one, instead of Adam, awkward haha
Thanks Tahereh, I will be extraordinary!

I didn't just receive a SIGNED finished copy of Shatter Me though, here's a pic of the sweet swag the HarperCollins team gave each attendee

Thanks so much to Shannon and the entire HarperCollins/Frenzy team, for an amazing night, great swag and delicious pie! Haha I can't wait for the next one!

ARC Review and Giveaway: Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer

Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer
Release Date: Jun. 26th/12.
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Source: ARC from Publisher
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
What happens when happily ever after…isn’t?

Delilah is a bit of a loner who prefers spending her time in the school library with her head in a book—one book in particular. Between the Lines may be a fairy tale, but it feels real. Prince Oliver is brave, adventurous, and loving. He really speaks to Delilah.

And then one day Oliver actually speaks to her. Turns out, Oliver is more than a one-dimensional storybook prince. He’s a restless teen who feels trapped by his literary existence and hates that his entire life is predetermined. He’s sure there’s more for him out there in the real world, and Delilah might just be his key to freedom.

Delilah and Oliver work together to attempt to get Oliver out of his book, a challenging task that forces them to examine their perceptions of fate, the world, and their places in it. And as their attraction to each other grows along the way, a romance blossoms that is anything but a fairy tale.

My thoughts:

This was my first Picoult read but it definitely won't be my last!

Picoult and daughter Van Leer have have conceived a fun adventurous romance, that jumps off the page.

The romance between Delilah and Oliver is sweet and the reader will be rooting for them both throughout this novel. I don't usually take to well to his/her narrative, but Jodi and Samantha have penned these two voices in such a way that while they're distinctive they blend well with one another. I had a feeling of nostalgia while reading Between the Lines, Delilah gets to live many young girls' fantasy. I mean come on, who didn't dream of having their own prince charming jumping out the pages they read (For me it was Aladdin- don't laugh people :)).

While this romance blossoms, we're given a separate narrative/prose of Prince Charming's (Oliver) adventures, the book in which brings Delilah and Oliver together. This treatment of intertextuality, that Jodi and Samantha uses, truly adds a distinctive voice and element not usually seen in much YA- I truly appreciated this!

Between the Lines, is the perfect light read for the beach season!

Happy Reading!!!

Teaser Tuesday: Temptation by Karen Ann Hopkins

I flippin LOVED this book! Here's just a little sexy teaser from Hopkins' debut, releasing June 26th from HarlequinTEEN!
Enjoy!

I stifled a gasp as his fingers ever so softly traced my cheekbone and then down to my chin and finally over my mouth, which parted slightly on its own, to my chargin. Sometime during his exploration of my face, the horses had stopped and I didn't even notice. A surge of pleasure traveled through my body, starting from where his fingers touched and spreading outward.

Indie Review: Easy by Tammara Webber

Easy by Tammara Webber
NOW AVAILABLE ON KINDLE!
Source: Purchased on my Kindle
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she’s single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, stalked by her ex’s frat brother, and failing a class for the first time in her life.

Her econ professor gives her an email address for Landon, the class tutor, who shows her that she’s still the same intelligent girl she’s always been. As Jacqueline becomes interested in more from her tutor than a better grade, his teasing responses make the feeling seem mutual. There’s just one problem—their only interactions are through email.

Meanwhile, a guy in her econ class proves his worth the first night she meets him. Nothing like her popular ex or her brainy tutor, Lucas sits on the back row, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. At a downtown club, he disappears after several dances that leave her on fire. When he asks if he can sketch her, alone in her room, she agrees—hoping for more.

Then Jacqueline discovers a withheld connection between her supportive tutor and her seductive classmate, her ex comes back into the picture, and her stalker escalates his attention by spreading rumors that they’ve hooked up. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy.

Author Recommendation: Mature Young Adults (language, drinking, sexual situations)

My Thoughts:
Easy is a breath of fresh air!

I kept seeing this title pop up all over the blogsphere the past couple weeks and after reading all fellow bloggers review on Goodreads I had to purchase myself a copy. So glad I did! Webber's ability to capture the voice of the new adult is inspiring (especially in my own writing). You'll see many grammatical errors in independent e-books, but not so with Webber- this was definitely refreshing.

Easy, is a contemporary coming of age story, about a young woman forced to find her true self. Jacqueline suffers from what I refer to as the "BELLA COMPLEX" i.e. you define yourself and allow your whole world to revolve around one person (Edward). Many people do this and don't realize it until the rug is lifted out from under them and they're forced to open their eyes. I thoroughly enjoyed reading from Jacqueline's (not Jackie) perspective. She's smart, and learns from her mistakes and I think she's a great role-model for many teenage girls.

Of course now it's going to seem like I'm contradicting myself as I explain how much I thoroughly loved Lucas. But I'm not I swear, he's a great guy who compliments Jacqueline in the best ways possible. O and I should mention, the scenes between these two were quite steamy- LOVED IT! :)

This story is the perfect beach read! I plan on reading Webber's other Between the Lines series this Summer as well, if it's anything like her latest release I'm sure I won't be dissappointed.

Happy Reading!!!

Review: A Midsummer's Nightmare by Kody Keplinger

A Midsummer's Nightmare by Kody Keplinger
Now Available!!!
Publisher: Poppy
Source: ARC swap with other blogger
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
Whitley Johnson's dream summer with her divorcé dad has turned into a nightmare. She's just met his new fiancée and her kids. The fiancée's son? Whitley's one-night stand from graduation night. Just freakin' great.

Worse, she totally doesn't fit in with her dad's perfect new country-club family. So Whitley acts out. She parties. Hard. So hard she doesn't even notice the good things right under her nose: a sweet little future stepsister who is just about the only person she's ever liked, a best friend (even though Whitley swears she doesn't "do" friends), and a smoking-hot guy who isn't her stepbrother...at least, not yet. It will take all three of them to help Whitley get through her anger and begin to put the pieces of her family together.

Filled with authenticity and raw emotion, Whitley is Kody Keplinger's most compelling character to date: a cynical Holden Caulfield-esque girl you will wholly care about.

My thoughts:
Keplinger is always my go-to author for fast, fresh, contemporary YA!

Like it's two predecessors, A Midsummer's Nightmare is full of teenage angst and sarcasm. Whit definitely has some Daddy issues to work through, but her sarcastic and frank narration truly make for an enjoyable read.

The Johnson household is definitely not your nuclear family home- there's dysfunction and taboos galore, but they make for an interesting read TRUST ME!

Sexy times are to be had in this read, while Nate and Whit aren't your average couple (being step-siblings and all) you'll still be rooting for them all the way to the end. This is definitely the case where opposites attract. Nate is a great guy, smart, fun, kind o and gorgeous! haha. He's exactly the kind of guy Whit needs to help get her life back on track.

The dialogue between Whit and her father was poignant and emotional, you truly see how a parents love and attention (or lack thereof) can impact their child's choices.

Thanks you Kody, for always tackling difficult but realistic issues, with heart and humour!

I must admit, while I enjoyed A Midsummer's Nightmare, The DUFF still remains my favourite Keplinger read (I would love to see a sequel to The DUFF someday!)

This is a great Summer read and I would recommend it to all Keplinger fans and if haven't read her work yet, what are you waiting for? She's AMAZING! :)

Happy Reading!!!

Review & Author Interview: This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers

This Is Not A Test by Courtney Summers
Release Date: June 19th/12.
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Source: E-ARC from Publisher
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually wantto live. But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside. When everything is gone, what doyou hold on to?
My thoughts:
"THIS IS NOT A TEST... I REPEAT...THIS IS NOT A TEST..."
This was my first Courtney Summers book, but I promise you, it won't be the last!

I can't believe how much I enjoyed this book, definitely my goto title for a horror/zombie fix.

The opening is so gripping! Sloane's narrative keeps the pace exciting right til the very end. The reader can tell right from the first page, that Sloane has a dark, violent past- which foreshadows the events about to come in her life. Her quiet demeanour juxtaposes the chaos surrounding her (i.e. epidemic of ravenous flesh-eating zombies).

This read is definitely not for the faint of heart. The gruesome violence and death surrounding Sloane's past and future create a melancholy atmosphere in the beginning. That is until Sloane joins forces with five other teens who actually want to survive this epidemic. Summer's writing combined with the stellar cast of six uniquely different characters, all forced into close quarters, makes for a truly action-packed read.

Believe it or not, with all this going on Summers still manages to incorporate a romance full of hot tension.   No love triangles in this read (so I won't mention my favourite character and give it away).

I do have a couple of issues with this read though. I'm hoping this is the first in a series because some things were kind of left up in the air for me:
1)Unanswered questions, especially concerning Mr. Baxter
2) Ending, to ambiguous for my liking (PLEASE HAVE A SEQUEL!!! :))

With all that said, I truly enjoyed THIS IS NOT A TEST. I went through it in one sitting I just couldn't stop! I think Summers has done a great job of giving the reader six very different perspectives on how one would react when forced into a life or death situation. I look forward to reading much more from her!

If you like some bite, action and gore galore in your YA, than pick up This Is Not A Test, it'll have you on the edge of your seat from cover to cover!

Happy Reading!!!

Now please join me in welcoming Courtney to the blog today!!!

1. This Is Not A Test is very different from your contemporary works, what inspired this
shift?
They say "write what you love" and I've always loved zombies, from the time I was
twelve/thirteen.  It was inevitable!  :)

2. Sloane is a very complex character, what inspired you to create her?
Thank you!  In a lot of zombie survival narratives the main character is usually someone
who has an unwavering will to live.  I was really eager and interested in exploring a
character who doesn't want to live during the zombie apocalypse.  I knew it would be a
challenge to write and I always like a challenge.

3. It's the end of the world, what's the first thing you want to do before it comes to an
end?
Tell the people I love them that I love them.  And then probably cry!  A lot.

4. We're introduced to six very different teens in This Is Not A Test, which one would
you say you relate to the most? Least?
I think I relate most to Grace and Harrison.  Like Grace, I don't like conflict but I am
fiercely protective of the people I love.  Like Harrison, I am extremely emotional (but
hopefully less annoying!)--I'm not the best person in a crisis.  I relate least to
Rhys--I understand him but in the same situation, I'm not sure I would make the same
decisions he does.

5. If you could pick one song that best describes This Is Not A Test, which one would you
pick?
Such a hard question!  It's not so much a song that best describes THIS IS NOT A TEST,
but I think it's perfect for Sloane:  Exile, Vilify by The National.

Thank you for stopping by today Courtney!

Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Hayley!

Waiting on Wednesday: Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter

Isn't the cover just GORGEOUS?!!!

Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter
Release Date: September 2012
Publisher: HarlequinTEEN
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I'd tell my sister no.
I'd never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I'd zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I'd hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I'd tell them I love them.
I wish... Yeah, I wish.

What titles are you waiting on this week???

Happy Reading!!!
