Review: Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire
Now Available!!!
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Source: Purchased physical copy
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

My Thoughts:
I really got sucked into this one. It's the perfect fix for the romance lover, looking for a contemporary break from the paranormal plots dominating the blogsphere.

I really like the trends that have been emerging in the Publishing Industry as of late. So many indie authors' works are being given the chance they deserve, and I truly appreciate this. Beautiful Disaster is the perfect example of the NEW ADULT genre that's been taking over as of late. It will appeal to Teens just finishing up high school/starting college or university, and it even has the reach to the adult market. The content is definitely more mature, but no less satisfying!

While I really enjoyed this book, I did get annoyed with Abby several times. I felt that she lead, the men pursuing her, on a lot. Although, I don't think this was McGuire's intention, that's the way the protagonist came off. With that said, I was very jealous of her throughout this book because she had the undivided attention of the amazingly sexy Travis. McGuire does a great job of penning sizzingly chemistry between these two. I was rooting for them the entire way. Even when Abby was annoying the heck out of me.

Travis, sexy, sexy Travis, sigh. This man is intense with a capital I, almost to the point where it was a little scary. I'm not to sure he's stable enough to be in a relationship, but O did I enjoy watching him chase after Abby. The boy is relentless!

Another thing that irked me about this book was the ending. It was a little to hokey for my liking (without getting to spoilery). Plus I don't really see where else she can take these two, so I'm not really gonna hold my breath for a sequel. But I will continue to read her other series as she writes amazing chemistry.

Overall, I would recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance, while the scenes weren't graphic, they were sexy non-the-less.

Hey There and Happy Tuesday! This week's teaser is brought to you from Scarlet (Book 2 in the Lunar Chronicles) by Marissa Meyer, it's amazing!
Enjoy!
Scarlet clamped both hands over her mouth, smothering the cry, as her ears waited for the snap of Hunter's neck.
Wolf froze and blinked at her. His eyes flickered, empty and mad one moment, then almost dazed. Surprised to see her there. His pupils widened.

ARC Review: Ten by Gretchen McNeil

Ten by Gretchen McNeil
Release Date: September 16th/12.
Publisher: Balzer and Bray
Source: ARC from Publisher
Synopsis courtesy of Goodreads:
And their doom comes swiftly.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

My Thoughts:

A face-paced thriller, that will have you looking over your shoulder well into the night.

I had my doubts going into Ten. I don't usually like horror books, but after finishing McNeil's second book, I think she may make a thriller fan out of me. Gretchen does a great job of blending in ten distinct personalties, as seen through Meg's third person narration. Each character has a distinct voice, which makes it harder for the reader to pinpoint the true murderer of the story- they all have a possible motive. Aside from the true identity of the murderer, another mystery unfolds between this selected ten. They're all connected in some way and the reader is given hints along the way, and must puzzle it all together. I personally, I was kept guessing right to the very end. I never was very good at Clue...:)

Along with the mystery, the suspense Gretchen has penned will leave readers with goosebumps. I really enjoyed how Ten was reminiscent of classic 90s slasher films like, Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer- they're scary without bordering on disturbing, which made for an adreniline-driven plot. Each chapter ends on a suspenseful note that will have you flipping to the next chapter. In fact, there was one chapter that reminded me The Ring- I was constantly looking over my shoulder and keeping an eye on my television screen, while reading it. Which effectively kept me up well into the night- the perfect time to read Ten

While the romance of the story (i.e. the relationship between Meg and T.J.) wasn't as prevalent in Ten, as I usually prefer in my YA, it was still great to watch these two work there history out, even if one of them may be the killer. :)

Overall, I read Ten in one sitting simply because I couldn't put the book down. I enjoyed the characters and the blend of mystery and suspense and would recommend this book to those looking for a lighter thrill ride in their YA.

Happy Reading!!!
